Beginner:
After wrapping up our hiragana we move right onto learning the other writing format that is used for foreign words, katakana! We also learned how to ask the price of an item and how to tend Japanese yen (en in their country). Seems like a good time to go shopping. Alas, another torturous week is upon us!

Advanced:
Today’s language class was focused on Tanabata, a Japanese festival about two gods who are in love and reunite once every year on July 7th. We read about the festival in Japanese and learned all the related kanjis, and ended the class by watching an animated adaptation of the mythology behind the story. It was really fun and I look forward to the celebration at the Academy! -Abhishek

Hachimaki and Uchiwa Activity
During the evening all the students in the Japanese Academy made crafts together in the Andrew’s Hall multipurpose room. With the help of Sabo-senpai, Chung-senpai, and Tomomatsu-senpai, we found kanji and other phrases that were significant to us and wrote them stylistically on hachimaki (headbands) and uchiwa (fans). Everyone had a great time creating their own works of art, even those who weren’t artists (like myself!)
