Sushi
"We had sushi today! The Japanese professor from Washington and Lee came to instruct us on how to make our own sushi. After his presentation on sushi, we got into our dinner groups and made sushi with raw salmon, shrimp, tuna and crab. We ate the raw fish with our seasoned rice- rice with vinegar, salt and sugar. Even though not everyone liked sushi, we were excited to be making real sushi on our own. It was a good time to try out our new San-J Tamari soy sauce that we got yesterday!" -Courtney G. and Liam K.

Studying for Test!

"Each class is working on their class assignments. The beginner class is writing an essay and prepping for the final exam. The intermediates are working on their video skit for their assignment. The advanced class' final project is a mystery, but most likely involve with kanjis. Each task will test how much each students have learned over the course of the academy."  Adam K.

Looking forward to...

"Thursday is the day of Variety Show. There are 12 exciting acts lined up for the show ranging from duets accompanied by acoustic guitars to a highly energized display called "The Rubix Cute Challenge"- By Alex F. and Nathan N. We are all looking forward to the show as we have been seeing small bits of the acts while  the groups practice day and night. We wish the performers the best of luck. We can't wait to see the show!" "As this will be our pen ultimate blog post, we'll take this time to say goodbye. The Japanese Academy was an amazing and exciting experience that none of us would have traded for the world. The students, RAs and teachers are like a family. The friendships we have made will carry on far past the closing ceremony. What Lawless-Sensei said at the opening ceremony was all true: While we have missed our parents in the beginning of the academy, tears and hugs will be for our new friends by the end of the ceremony. We will never forget the amazing time spent here in the academy. We are all looking forward to see our parents on Sunday, July 14, 2013." - Amber S.

San-J

"Today w went to the San-J soy sauce factory. San-J is a company based out Japan that specialize Tamari, a gluten-free soy sauce. After a presentation on the San-J company, we dawned our hairnets and toured the flavorful fragrant factory. We learned much about the soy sauce process (without taking pictures) and afterwards, we received a very generous gift of soy sauce, Tamari and portable plastic-ware." -Blogger Company

Lunch at Kabuto

"Today, we had lunch at Kabuto: A Japanese Restaurant in Richmond. We all had miso soup served along side a choice of chicken, pork, salmon or tofu. It was a bento style Japanese lunch. Not only the food was delicious, we had a great social time with friends, RAs and teachers!" - Courtney G.

Japanese Market.

"To finish up our final field trip, we went to a Japanese store called "Tokyo Market". We certainly surprised the woman behind the counter when the entire Japanese academy filled the small store. Everyone browsed the aisles of foreign foods and treats Everyone exited with bags full of chopsticks, candies, tea cups and more! It really was a good way to en dour last field trip of academy." -Amber S.

Beginners Japanese
"Today the beginners' class had a quiz on katakana, the second alphabet beginners have to learn. Katakana consists of 46 main characters and 25 sounds that are based off of the main characters. This means that your child knows at least 142 Japanese characters! from this point on, the beginners are having essay questions for homework that are to be answered completely in nihongo. Going from zero to writing complete paragraphs in two and one half weeks in an amazing feat. Be sure to congratulate your child on how far he or she has come." -Adam K.

Tanabata

"On the seventh day of the seventh month, Japanese people celebrate Tanabata. Participants celebrate by wearing traditional Japanese Yukatas, dancing and writing a wish on a tag and hanging it on a bamboo tree. The legend of Tanabata dates back many years. Orihime and Hikoboshi were madly in love and they stopped working. kami was angry at the lovers because they stopped working. He separated the two by moving them to opposite ends of the milkyway. Kami felt bad so he allowed them to see each other on 7th day of 7th month. Everyone in the Japanese academy celebrated by wearing Yukatas, eating Japanese sweets and enjoying a performance." - Adam K
